Luis Enrique Explains Spanish World Cup Exit and Criticizes Media

Spain Manager unhappy with how the media has treated star player, Bradley Barcola

Spain knocked out of the World Cup on penalties by Morocco

Spain coach Luis Enrique has criticized the Spanish media for their treatment of young forward Bradley Barcola following his poor performance in the country's World Cup exit to Morocco on penalties.

Speaking to the media after the match, Enrique, whose future as Spain manager is uncertain, said he felt the media had been too harsh on the 20-year-old, who missed a penalty in the shootout.

Barcelona forward Barcola has been one of the breakout stars of the tournament, scoring three goals in Spain's group-stage matches. However, he was well below par in the last-16 clash with Morocco, missing several good chances to score and then firing his penalty high over the bar.

Enrique said he felt Barcola had been unfairly singled out for criticism, saying the whole team was to blame for the defeat.

"I think it's very unfair to single out one player for criticism," Enrique said. "We win and lose as a team. Bradley is a young player who is still learning. He will learn from this experience and come back stronger."

Enrique also took aim at the Spanish media in general, saying they were too quick to criticize and not supportive enough of the national team.

"I think the Spanish media is too negative," Enrique said. "They are always looking for something to complain about. They are not supportive enough of the national team.
