Harvest Moon to Shine During Partial Lunar Eclipse in Canada

Skywatchers' Delight

On Tuesday evening, Canadians will have a celestial treat as a Harvest Moon coincides with a partial lunar eclipse. This rare celestial event will offer a breathtaking astronomical display.

The Harvest Moon

Coinciding with the autumn equinox, the Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to September 22nd. Its traditional name stems from its significance in providing farmers with extra moonlight during the harvest season.

This year, the Harvest Moon will grace the skies on October 14th, casting a warm, golden glow across the land.

The Partial Lunar Eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse occurs when Earth's shadow falls on a portion of the full moon, shrouding it in darkness. As the moon moves through Earth's shadow, different parts of the moon will gradually darken, creating a mesmerizing celestial spectacle.

The partial lunar eclipse will be visible in Canada on Tuesday, October 14th, from approximately 9:02 PM to 12:54 AM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The peak of the eclipse will occur at 11:06 PM EDT, when up to 97% of the moon will be covered by Earth's shadow.

Viewing Tips

If weather permits, the Harvest Moon and partial lunar eclipse will be visible to the naked eye across Canada. To enhance your viewing experience, consider seeking out a location with minimal light pollution.

For the best views, binoculars or a telescope can amplify the details of the lunar surface and the gradual progression of the eclipse.
