Dabney Coleman, the veteran character actor who appeared in films such as "9 to 5," "Tootsie," and "The Towering Inferno," died Thursday at his home in Carpinteria, California. He was 92.

Coleman's family confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter, but did not provide a cause.

Coleman was born in Austin, Texas, on January 3, 1932. He began his acting career in the early 1960s, appearing in small roles in television shows and films.

Coleman's breakthrough role came in the 1979 comedy "9 to 5." He played Franklin Hart Jr., the sexist and chauvinistic boss of three women (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton). Coleman's performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Coleman continued to appear in a wide variety of roles throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He played a ruthless businessman in "Tootsie," a corrupt politician in "The Towering Inferno," and a bumbling detective in "Short Circuit."

Coleman's last film role was in the 2018 comedy "The Week Of." He also appeared in several television shows in recent years, including "Modern Family" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

Coleman's death is a loss for the entertainment industry. He was a talented and versatile actor who brought joy to audiences of all ages.
